The Barrow County Sheriff’s Office reported the following incidents: read more...

The Barrow County Sheriff’s Office reported the following incidents:

FELONY THEFT: On May 15, a deputy was dispatched to Laythan Court, Winder, where a man said he forgot to lock his truck overnight and someone entered it and stole a Colt Commanding Officers .45-caliber pistol valued at $2,000. The deputy also went to a nearby home where a woman said someone entered her unlocked Honda car and stole a Codex brand digital camera valued at $200. The case to the camera was later recovered in a neighbor’s yard.

The deputy also responded to another home on Laythan Court, where a man said someone entered his unlocked Chevrolet pickup and took about $3 in change from the center console. A radio, golf clubs and tools were left untouched.

HIT AND RUN: On May 15, a deputy was dispatched about 11 a.m. to Morrow Drive and Tanners Bridge Road, where a 24-year-old Loganville man reported he was making a turn when a red Dodge Ram pickup hit his Chevrolet Camaro so hard it spun his car around several times.

The pickup then fled from the wreck scene. The victim was unable to get the license plate number.

NOISE: On May 16, a deputy was dispatched about 12:30 a.m. to Roxey Maxey Road, Winder, where a noise complaint was filed. The deputy arrived and could hear loud music coming from vehicles in the yard and from the house. The resident explained he was hanging out with friends and having a few drinks. The deputy advised him to cease the loud noise.

ID FRAUD: On May 15, a deputy met with a 48-year-old Winder man who explained he went to the county jail to have his criminal history run because he was applying for a job in security.

The jail staff informed him he had a 32-page criminal history and he explained he had never been arrested before. The deputy looked into the matter and found where another man, who does have the extensive criminal history, had used the victim’s name as an alias in 2007 and this had linked him to the man’s rap sheet.

ID FRAUD: On May 16, a 37-year-old Winder man reported that on May 7 he received a notice of collection from a company which advised him he owed $505 to the Barrow Regional Medical Center in Winder. The man said he had never been to the hospital and that on the day the services were rendered he was in Alabama.

He complainant said he went to the hospital and learned someone was admitted under his name and that this person was brought to the hospital by a sheriff’s deputy. This man was charged with DUI among other offenses.

However, a later investigation revealed the true identity of the man who was arrested and he was subsequently charged with giving a false name. The complainant was provided with police reports he could take to the hospital to clear up the mistake.

MARITAL DISPUTE: On May 16, a deputy meet with a Hall County man, who said he and his estranged wife were having a dispute because she recently left him after they had been married only about a week and now she took property from their home that belonged to him.

The man said he didn’t want to have his new bride arrested for theft, but she had his appointment book and he wanted it back. The deputy accompanied the man to the house in Barrow County where the wife was now living.

The woman partially opened the door and told the deputy she only took her personal clothing from the house. However, she admitted taking the appointment book by mistake and she handed it to the deputy.

The deputy returned the book to the man and he advised the man to file any other reports in the county where he believed items were stolen. However, the man replied that he went to the Hall County Sheriff’s Office and a deputy told him, “She’s your wife. You deal with it.”

FACEBOOK FRAY: On May 16, a deputy was dispatched to a home in Winder, where a woman discovered that her husband had started a Facebook page and when she confronted him he started yelling at her. They began cursing each other and she became fearful and locked herself in the bedroom and called 911.

The husband said that when his wife discovered he had his own Facebook page that she became extremely upset and began cursing him. Both had calmed down when the deputy arrived and no one was arrested.

The Barrow County Sheriff’s Office reported the following incidents:

THEFT: On May 7, a deputy was dispatched to Harry McCarty Road, Bethlehem, where a man reported that numerous items were stolen out of a barn located across the road from his home. The man found a gate open and chain missing from the property. Upon checking he found someone had stolen two refrigerators, two dishwashers, three microwaves, two bedroom suites, two coffee tables, four end tables, two floor lamps and two truck loads of scrap metal, altogether worth $3,760.

SHOPLIFTING: On May 7, a deputy was dispatched to Tractor Supply on Plaza Drive, Winder, where store employees found an empty box for boots along with 12 price tags in a changing room that had been removed from a belt, pants and shirts. The store video was viewed and it shows two women in the clothing section and one tries on a pair of boots in a display area, then keeps them on. The second woman, who entered wearing flip flops, exited the store wearing a pair of boots.

The suspects, both white women, entered the store carrying large purses.

COMPLAINT: On May 7, a deputy was dispatched to a home in Statham, where a couple is having a difficult time with their 35-year-old son, who doesn’t work, and sits around the house all day and often argues with his parents. On this day, the son was complaining because the parents would not furnish him with some pain pills.

The deputy told the parents how they can evict him if necessary and the deputy told the son about the fact his parents are supporting him and allowing him to stay there.

DAMAGE: On May 7, a 50-year-old Winder man reported that in April he found someone had punched holes in the door of his vehicle and a hole in the muffler. On this day, he found that someone had poured sugar in his fuel tank.

FATHER ASSAULTED: On May 8, a deputy was dispatched to a home in Winder, where he found a man holding a bloody towel to his head. The 70-year-old man explained he let his daughter move into his home because she did not have a job and had recently been released from the Clarke County Jail in Athens.

The daughter, Patrice M. Green, 49, would not help around the house, but was very demanding on him. The man said they were in the kitchen when she argued about him cooking some food. She hit her father in the side of the face with a glass pot, which cut him, then she threw him to the floor and began hitting him.

The man said he was holding his phone, which was damaged during the struggle. The deputy found pieces of white ceramic material consistent with a pot being broken and the broken phone. However, the father said he didn’t want to press charges against his daughter.

The deputy spoke to the daughter who said they had argued over her leaving the house and that she only hit her father when he attacked her.

Green was arrested on charges of aggravated assault, battery and trespassing.

DAMAGE: On May 8, a deputy was dispatched to Cross Creek Place, Auburn, where a woman reported someone broke into her storage building, causing at least $300 in damage. She did not find anything missing although cabinet drawers were pulled open.

CAT INJURED: On May 8, a deputy was dispatched at 9:16 p.m. to Newham Walk, Bethlehem, where neighbors were having a dispute over a dog and cat. The man said his dog escaped from his home and when they went to retrieve the dog, they found a cat on the dog’s snout.

The man’s girlfriend tried to separate the animals, but the cat owner grabbed her and threw her to the ground. The man and his girlfriend insisted the cat attacked the dog. The deputy advised them to contact animal control.

The deputy spoke to the cat owner, who said the dog grabbed her 16-year-old cat by its mouth, which caused severe injuries. The woman said she took the cat to a veterinarian, who decided to euthanize the cat due to the injuries.

She denied throwing the dog owner’s friend to the ground.

BURGLARY: On May 9, a deputy was dispatched to Chicken Lyle Road, Winder, where a man said someone entered his carport and stole several items, including a 1987 Honda four-wheeler, a paint gun, hammer, drill and toolbox, all valued at more than $2,200.

BURGLARY: On May 10, a deputy was dispatched to Corinth Church Road, Winder, where a man said someone stole the air conditioning unit behind the house and crawled under the house and damaged the plumbing and stole the water heater.

WOMAN PROBLEM: On May 11, a deputy was dispatched to a Winder home after a man called to say he was out of town and his girlfriend was at his home removing property from the residence. The deputy arrived and met the woman, who told him she called her boyfriend and they had an argument because she learned he was seeing another woman in Oklahoma.

She told her boyfriend she was ending their relationship and taking her property out of the house. The deputy called the boyfriend in Oklahoma and he told the deputy he didn’t have time for this nonsense because he’s in Oklahoma working and she didn’t have permission to remove anything from the house.

The woman also lived at the home and the deputy explained this was a civil matter.

DEATH THREAT: On May 12, a deputy met with a Winder man who said he believed his wife was trying to hire someone to kill him. He said he has text messages from his wife to prove it because he called her and pretended to be a man who wanted to be her boyfriend.

He showed the phone to the deputy, who read a conversation in which the pair talked about having a sexual encounter in which he would get oral sex.

The woman told the man that she had contacted DFACS about her husband and he would get what he deserved. The man then told the wife that he knew people who would kill her husband and make it look like a robbery. He also brought up getting the insurance money and splitting it.

The man admitted he texted her these questions in an effort to show that she wants him killed. The deputy advised the man he could not entrap someone into a murder scheme against himself by harassing her about it.

The man was advised to get a protection order if he was afraid of his wife.

THEFT: On May 13, a resident of Bowman Mill Road reported someone entered a building where he refurbishes old police cars and two vehicles were damaged. Two Ford Crown Victorias were damaged and a radar unit and a camera system were stolen. He estimated the damage to the windows at $400 and the value of the missing items at $3,257.

TRAILER STOLEN: On May 13, a deputy was dispatched to Preserve Lane, Bethlehem, where a man said someone stole his 2003 homemade utility trailer valued at $775.

INJURY: On May 15, a deputy was dispatched about 4 a.m. to Barrow Regional Medical Center where a 25-year-old man was being treated for a bloody wound on top of his head. He also had red and swollen cheeks.

The man said he didn’t remember what happened. He said he took his dog out for a walk and the next thing he remembers is lying on the ground. He was unable to provide further information on his injuries.

A ribbon cutting recently was held at The Georgia Piedmont Arts Center’s gallery gift shop in downtown Statham.

Although the shop has been open about a month, the ribbon cutting ceremony was held as an official grand opening May 4.

The gift shop, located at 1906 Railroad Street, is housed inside Second Hand Rose Antique and Market Place.

The Georgia Piedmont Arts Center, or GPAC, is in Auburn at an old Victorian cottage. With just three rooms, GPAC President Kathleen Gill said the group could not give up a classroom in the cottage to dedicate it to a gift shop.

“Being an all-volunteer group, maintaining a dedicated space for a gift shop and keeping it open all the time would have been beyond challenging,” Gill said. “The kind folks at Second Hand Rose are very interested in supporting the arts, and once we got to talking, we made arrangements for a dedicated space within their building, allowing us six-days-a-week exposure to the public and it gives them another unique draw to their business.”

The shop includes more than a dozen GPAC artists’ works from photography to fused glass. The shop also offers unique jewelry, paintings, paper crafts and pottery.

“We look forward now to preparing for our kid’s art camps the week of June 3 and again, June 15. There’s going to be a lot of fun art projects for the youngsters,” Gill said. “Of course we have ongoing instruction in painting, sculpture, pottery (both wheel and hand-built) and drawing.”

GPAC also offers children’s art classes the second Saturday of each month. On the second Thursday evening each month, it offers a “creative canvas” class, which is a two-hour painting class.

All classes are held at the GPAC cottage, 1396 3rd Avenue, Auburn.

Statham Gift Shop hours are Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. until 5:30 p.m.

Gill said that plans are in the works to hold some art events at the new store location in the near future.

A Statham woman was recently recognized with a blue ribbon for a family recipe she submitted to a social networking site for home cooks called Just A Pinch Recipes (www.justapinch.com).

“Tiffany Springer’s Mom’s Impossible Cheeseburger Pie” recipe won the award, and just in time for Mother’s Day.

“My mom found this recipe when I was a kid and I absolutely loved it,” Springer said. “What is great about this dish is that you can really get creative and add to this wonderful basic recipe to make it your (own).”

The recipe was named a blue ribbon winner by Just A Pinch Food Editor Janet Tharpe, who said to land the award Springer served up a “full-flavored dish that was both tasty and easy to prepare.”

Springer is one of 12 Statham residents sharing recipes with the social network, which in two years has become the largest database of user-posted recipes, according to Just a Pinch Social Media Manager Annakate Tefft Ross.

On the site, users can post “family tested and approved” recipes and try recipes submitted by others, use a menu planner and grocery list, create custom cookbooks, print hundreds of grocery coupons, enter recipe contests and join discussion groups.

Members may also use Pinch It!, a site feature that allows users to capture and share recipes from virtually anywhere online with a simple click and seamlessly integrate them into a digital recipe box.

The features allow home cooks to build relationships virtually, as if sitting around the kitchen table.

“We continually add new features to the club based on the feedback of our members,” Tharpe said. “It’s because of people like Tiffany Springer, who is proud to share her family’s favorite recipes with other home cooks, that the club has become so popular and is growing so fast.”

Founded in 2010, Just A Pinch Recipes offers free memberships and premium perks. To see what it’s all about, go to www.justapinch.com.
