Child rape suspect jailed without bond in Jackson County

A 20-year-old Atlanta man remained in the Jackson County Detention Center on Tuesday on charges that he raped and sodomized a girl in a home near Jefferson.

Fidel Julian Hernandez is charged with rape, three counts of aggravated child molestation, two counts of aggravated sodomy, cruelty to children and aggravated sexual battery. The numerous charges resulted from the assault occurring at different times over a period of time, Jackson County sheriff’s Capt. Rich Lott said.

The most recent incident occurred in early July and the suspect was arrested Aug. 4 on a bus in Jackson, Miss., Lott said Tuesday.

Authorities began investigating the attack after deputies were dispatched to the Northeast Georgia Medical Center in Gainesville, where the mother of the 14-year-old girl told authorities that her daughter was raped while visiting a relative at a home west of Jefferson on July 4.

Investigators gathered witness statements and other evidence against Hernandez, Sheriff Janis Mangum said.

Warrants were obtained and with the assistance of the U.S. Marshal’s Office the suspect was arrested in Mississippi after his bus stopped in Jackson. Authorities believe Hernandez was headed to California, Lott said.

The suspect was denied bond.
