Fire destroys house in Nicholson

A fire destroyed a home Wednesday night on Cabin Creek Drive in Nicholson, according to the Jackson County Emergency Services.

Firefighters responded to the blaze shortly before 9 p.m. and found the home fully involved.

A motorist from Nicholson was driving by the house when he saw the fire, according to the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office. The man called 911 and beat on the door. He then heard someone shout to him from a nearby car, deputies said.

Two women were out of the house and said no one else was inside.

One woman explained she was asleep when she heard the smoke alarm and upon opening a bedroom door, she could see the flames. She then ran outside, where the other woman was lying on a cargo trailer looking at the stars, deputies said.

One woman said she may have left a cigarette burning in the bathroom.

The fire is still under investigation.
