Museum in Jefferson planning October celebration honoring famous doctor

The Crawford Long Museum in downtown Jefferson will host the “Fire and Ice 200th Birthday Frolic” event on Oct. 24 to honor the 200th birthday of Crawford Long.

The party runs 4-10 p.m. and includes ice carving demonstrations, music, a birthday cake cutting and fireworks. The celebration is free.

The museum honors Long, who first used anesthesia for surgery. A surgery re-enactment will take place at 5 p.m. and includes the unveiling of a 6-foot ice sculpture replica of Dr. Long’s statue in Statuary Hall in Washington, D.C.

Among the other activities are dance performances,  a fire flow performance and many vendor booths. Fireworks will end the celebration.
