Madison County jury convicts man of vehicular homicide; sentencing Wednesday

Northern Circuit Judicial Superior Court Judge Jeffery Malcom is expected to impose a sentence Wednesday on a man convicted in Madison County Superior Court of vehicular homicide.

Edwin Juarez, 20, was convicted Friday following a four-day trial on charges of DUI, homicide by vehicle and leaving the scene of an accident involving a fatality.

The wreck occurred Sept. 21, 2013, on Garnett Ward Road in Hull, where Juarez lost control of his vehicle and hit a tree, according to Assistant District Attorney Michael Coveney, who prosecuted the case.

The crash claimed the life of a backseat passenger, Danny Cencerous, 31, who died at the scene, Coveney said.

Juarez fled the crash site on foot but was arrested about four hours later in Athens, where law enforcement officers determined he was still showing signs of intoxication, the prosecutor said.

Juarez, who was a coworker of the victim, refused to take a blood-alcohol test.
