Athens man gets 15-year sentence in DUI homicide

Following his conviction last week for the DUI homicide of Danny Cencerous, an Athens man received a 15-year sentence during a Wednesday hearing.

Northern Circuit Judge Jeffery Malcom sentenced Edwin Juarez-Alpizar, 20, to serve 10 years in prison and five years on probation, according to Northern Circuit Assistant District Attorney Michael Coveney.

The defendant was driving a car on Garnett Ward Road in Hull when it crashed on Sept. 21, 2013, killing 31-year-old backseat passenger Cencerous.

Juarez-Alpizar fled the wreck, but was arrested later in Athens, where law enforcement officers said he still showed signs of intoxication. He refused a blood-alcohol test.

A jury in Madison County Superior Court on Friday convicted him on charges of DUI, homicide by vehicle and leaving the scene of an accident involving a fatality.
